At the Heart of Kent Walking Festival, we believe that exploring the countryside on foot is one of the best ways to experience the landscapes, heritage and communities that make Kent so special. We also believe that tourism should give back to the places we visit, helping them to thrive for generations to come.
Walking is naturally one of the most sustainable ways to travel. It allows us to slow down, connect with nature, discover local stories, and experience the unique character of our towns, villages and countryside with minimal impact on the environment.
The Heart of Kent Walking Festival is committed to promoting regenerative tourism – a way of travelling that leaves a positive impact on the environment, local economy and communities. Through our festival, we encourage visitors to explore responsibly, support local businesses, and develop a deeper appreciation of the landscapes and heritage that make the Heart of Kent unique.
By taking part, you are helping to:
Support local cafés, pubs, accommodation providers, shops and attractions along our walking routes.
Celebrate and preserve Kent’s rich cultural, natural and historical heritage.
Encourage low-carbon travel and outdoor recreation.
Spread the benefits of tourism across local communities.
Foster a greater understanding of the importance of protecting our countryside, wildlife and natural habitats.
We are continually looking for ways to make the festival as environmentally responsible as possible. Our approach includes:
Where possible, we encourage walkers to use public transport, walk, cycle or share journeys to reach festival events. Many walks are accessible from local transport links, helping to reduce car journeys.
We prioritise digital communications and online resources to minimise the need for printed materials and reduce waste.
We encourage all participants to follow the Countryside Code, stay on designated paths, respect wildlife and habitats, and leave no trace of their visit.
Our walking routes showcase local businesses, heritage sites and visitor attractions, helping visitors discover and support the people and places that make the Heart of Kent special.
Many of our walks are led by knowledgeable local volunteers, guides and organisations who share their passion for the area and help visitors connect with its stories, history and landscapes.
Every walker can play a part in making the festival more sustainable.
