    William Shipley is renowned for setting up the "Society for the Encouragement of Arts" the fore runner to the Royal Society of Arts.a
  2. William Hazlitt, essayist and cultural contribution to Maidstone
    William Hazlitt is recognised an artist and was keenly interested in politics and philosophy writing a book A Study of the Principles of Human Action in 1805. He renowned as being the first major drama critic and therefore the Hazlitt Theatre carries his name.
  3. Sir Thomas Wyatt and his place in History
    Sir Thomas Wyatt was related to Henry VIII. Lived at Allington Castle and had lands at Boxley. He also established himself as a prominent military figure and took part in the seige of Boulogne.
  4. Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake and his connections to Maidstone
    Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake was an interesting character who had a zoo at Cobtree Manor Park and used to go and sit with his lions and elephants but also set up Maidstone Carriage Museum collecting these old vehicles as he saw them being destroyed and felt they should be preserved as part of history.

    The Parish Church of the county town of Kent was largely built by Archbishop Courtenay (14th century) and is one of the largest and finest Perpendicular churches in England. Of note are the medieval choir stalls and the Washington family memorial.

  8. Historic Houses and Castle close to Maidstone
    Leeds, has the lovliest castle in the world but there are other castle ruins close by to explore and some spectacular Tudor villages and Medieval buildings.

    Maidstone Carriage Museum is home to a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles and transport curiosities. More than 60 vehicles are displayed, from grand carriages and ornate sleighs to antique sedan chairs and Victorian cabs - even an original ice cream cart.
