Uncover Mote Park Hidden Histories at Maidstone Community Mela

For the last four years, we have been undertaking a variety of research to uncover some of Mote Park’s hidden histories, including the location and remaining evidence of the original ‘Mote House’ which once stood at the bottom of the Long Valley.

 

We began with geophysical surveys in 2021, followed by test pits in 2022. Last year, we secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to undertake a 4-day archaeological excavation of the area.

 

This year, we will be bringing some of the discoveries from this dig to the Maidstone Mela on Saturday 14^th September. Come and see some of the fascinating finds and hear more about what we’ve learned so far.

 

What do the artefacts we’ve uncovered tell us about the history of this site? Can we determine the earliest phases of development and how it changed over time?

 

We’ll be joined by colleagues from Kent Archaeological Society and the KCC Community Archaeologist to talk about their work and how you can get involved.

 

The 2024 excavation gave us a brief insight into what remains, but there is much more to be discovered. Support our funding bid by adding your name to our list of supporters.
