Objective: The workshop gives participants the opportunity to create a personalised set of Coping Cards to help them manage difficult emotions and overcome challenging situations. The facilitators will support participants in recognising the value of self-soothing techniques in helping build strength and resilience, and in particular the use of Coping Cards in helping us to work toward personal goals. The goal is for each participant to leave the session with a meaningful, personalised set of cards, and an understanding of how and when to use them.
Use of Coping Cards: Self-soothing cards are used widely across different therapeutic modalities and have been effective in helping many people successfully implement coping strategies. Cards may include words and/or pictures. They should be simple, with brief prompts to facilitate use of a specific coping strategy, or reminders of a psychological or personal insight gained from therapy or elsewhere. Crucially, they are personalised and unique to everyone.
There are several benefits of self-soothing cards. They are portable, unthreatening, adaptable, accessible, and tailored to each person’s needs, preferences, and goals, and available to be used as needed.
Participants: This workshop would be suitable for any individual interested in learning about self-soothing cards and creating their own coping toolkit. Participants are not required to have any previous artistic experience. The workshop is intended for small groups to give the opportunity for group discussion in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Participants may share as much or as little of their personal life as they wish and are asked to be respectful of other participants' wishes and needs.
