About

Enjoy a 5-mile journey from Cliffe to Cooling, perfect for exploring the Hoo Peninsula.

We begin in the village of Cliffe, one of the oldest settlements on the peninsula and once a thriving medieval port on the River Thames. From Cliffe, we follow a section of the Saxon Shore Way, a long-distance trail that traces the line of the old Roman coastal defences built to protect Britain from seaborne invaders. This section of the path takes us through open countryside and across the North Kent Marshes.

As we continue towards the village of Cooling, we’ll discover the remains of Cooling Castle, built in the 14th century to defend the coast from French raids. The castle now stands as a impressive ruin beside the private home of musician Jools Holland.

Our return route loops back through peaceful fields and farmland, offering a gentle and scenic trail.

Route Details:

We’ll start in the heart of Cliffe village and pick up the Saxon Shore Way, heading out across the open landscape of the North Kent Marshes. The route takes in wide views, rich birdlife, and the distinctive atmosphere of this coastal landscape.

As we reach Cooling, we’ll pause to explore the exterior of Cooling Castle and learn more about its fascinating past before looping back through farmland towards Cliffe.
