Maidstone's American Connections
Start your day at Maidstone's historic All Saints' Church. A beautiful riverside building where you will find a memorial to local man Lawrence Washington, complete with the family coat of arms which was the inspiration for the "Stars and Stripes."
From there, take a stroll through the town to the Maidstone Museum, housed in the stately Elizabeth Chillington Manor. Amongst its fine collection of applied and oriental art, archaeology and natural history, is a superb ethnographical collection of Indian objects, collected by British explorer Julius Brenchley during the 19th centrury.
Take a break for lunch at one of the town's many cafes and restaurants. Then spend a leisurely afternoon at the spectacular Leeds Castle, once described as 'the loveliest castle in the world'. This is the 17th and 18th century home of the Fairfax family who governed Virginia for almost a century.
