Historic Churches & Villages

Begin your day at the All Saints Conservation Area - a fascinating complex of medieval buildings in an enchanting riverside setting.  Make sure you don’t miss these historic gems:

·  All Saints Church – known as ‘one of the grandest perpendicular churches in England’

·  The Archbishops’ Palace – built of Kentish ragstone, the Palace was used by the Archbishops of Canterbury as a resting place when travelling to London.

·  The Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages – a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles, housed in the Palace stables.

Just outside Maidstone, The Friars at Aylesford was England’s first Carmelite Priory, founded in 1242.  The medieval buildings are surrounded by tranquil grounds that are open to the public to view.  It is also worth taking a stroll through the pretty medieval village of Aylesford, stopping for lunch at the Chequer’s Inn.  After lunch, head over to the village of Bearsted – why not take the scenic route along part of the Pilgrims Way, taking in the pretty North Downs villages of Boxley and Detling.  On arrival in Bearsted, the Holy Cross Church in Bearsted is well worth a look with its Norman origins and distinctive gargoyles.
