Heritage By The River
The River Medway’s important role in Maidstone’s colourful history is reflected in some of the landmark attractions scattered along its banks.
Begin your day at the All Saints Conservation Area - a fascinating complex of medieval buildings in an enchanting riverside setting. Make sure you don’t miss these historic gems:
All Saints Church is known as ‘one of the grandest perpendicular churches in England’ and is next to the Archbishops' Palace Palace which was used by the Archbishops of Canterbury as a resting place when travelling to London. The Carriage Museum is a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles, housed in the Palace stables.
From here, take a guided stroll through Maidstone’s historic town centre, stopping at one of the town centre cafés or restaurants for a spot of lunch. Then take one of the river boat trips to Allington - you will have the chance to admire the idyllic scenery of the Maidstone Millenium River Park along the way. Round off the day with a visit to Kent Life at Allington – an award-winning open-air museum where historic buildings house exhibitions on life in Kent over the last 150 years. Why not indulge yourself in their lovely licensed tea-room? And see Britain’s last traditional working oast house!
