History of Corpus Christi Hall
Originally a dining hall of the Corpus Christi Fraternity - a mutual quasi religious society of local tradesmen to regulate business, observe certain religious services and amass wealth to look after the elderly and infirm members.
Founded in the early 15th Century the guild continued until 1547 when it was seized by the crown during the suppression of the religious guilds. The town bought the hall from the Crown in 1548. It reopened in 1549 as Maidstone grammar school until 1871, for those who could write their name and read Latin.
The building is now used as offices for a car hire company.
