Kent Castles and Historic houses
Leeds Castle is just a short distance from Maidstone and was once described as "the loveliest castle in the world". One of the most famous of the Kent Castles, its closeness to Maidstone makes Leeds Castle a fantastic day out and one which you will want to return to again and again.
Stoneacre, owned by the National Trust, is open to the public on
limited days each year. This fine Yeoman's house has a great hall and settles into the landscape within a cottage garden, orchard and wild flower meadow.
Within a very short driving distance are some other spectacular houses and castles which really shouldn't be missed. Ightham Mote, Chartwell, Knole, Quebec House, Scotney Castle and Smallhythe Place all belong to the National Trust, and make staying in Maidstone an excellent base to enjoy these properties and the advantages of your membership. The fabulous Hever Castle with its wonderful maze, Italian gardens, rowing boats, water maze, rose garden, walks, history and adventure playgrounds, makes for a spectacular day out whatever your age. Our sister website the Heart of Kent can provide you with further information and ideas of places to visit.
