By the River Medway
In the heart of the town is the River Medway where visitors can enjoy a relaxing trip down the river to Allington or to the rural village of Teston. Take in the idyllic scenery of Maidstone Millennium River Park on board either the Kentish Lady River Boat or the Allington Belle. With river Medway trips and the Maidstone Festival, there is a plenty of activity and attractions happenning at the River Medway.
The tour to Allington can be combined with a visit to Kent Life an award-winning open-air museum where historic buildings house exhibitions on life in Kent over the last 150 years.
The River Medway’s important role in Maidstone’s colourful history is reflected in some of the landmark attractions scattered along its banks. The All Saints Conservation Area has a fascinating complex of medieval buildings in an enchanting riverside setting with historic gems such as All Saints Church, known as ‘one of the grandest perpendicular churches in England’. The Archbishops' Palace, built of Kentish ragstone, was used by the Archbishops of Canterbury as a resting place when travelling to London. The Maidstone Carriage Museum has a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles, housed in the Palace stables.
